Background According to West Sumatra provincial department of education, the 7.6 SR September 30th 2009 earthquake has destroyed 5.724 class rooms in West Sumatra, and 1.793 are located in Padang Pariaman district. Data from cluster education, up to November 30th, 2009, the government has built 880 temporary class rooms. The West Sumatra provincial department of education stated that they still need 39 units of temporary class rooms to replace tends that have been used by 18 schools that were destroyed by the earthquake. 1170 students from primary school, junior high school and high school still had not have a decent place to study, they were still using emergency tends, cracked people’s terrace houses, and public facilities building to carry on with their learning. This condition is very dramatic for students that were preparing themselves for the national examination that was held in March 2010. If this condition continues longer, it could cause the quality of students in West Sumatra decreasing, especially in Padang Pariaman district.
Consequently, Aceh People’s Forum has decided to build 33 temporary class rooms of 9 local schools in Padang Pariaman district. Estimated length of construction is 3 months so that the temporary class rooms can be used by the students as soon as possible. This program was supported by the United Nation which coordinated by UNOCHA through Emergency Response Fund (ERF). APF had the fund of US$98,000 for building 33 temporary class rooms in Padang Pariaman district. This program is done to accelerate recovery for West Sumatra earthquake victims.
