The Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili revealed that more than 400 families in the Colombo District were impacted by the continuous down pour experienced from last night.
Many roads were flooded. The flow of traffic was also affected by road obstructions.
Minister of Mass Media and Communication Keheliya Rambukwella also took the initiative of inquiring into the conditions of families impacted by rain.
Several places along the Matugama-Aluthgama road and Aluthgama-Avitthawa road in the Kalutara District have gone under water. According to the Disaster Management Centre, many low lying areas in the Madurawala and Millaniya Divisional Secretariat Divisions were inundated.
Relief is being extended to the affected families via the District Secretariats. The affected families are being provided with cooked meals and essential food commodities. Secretary to the Disaster Management Ministry said compensation will be paid for damaged property after the estimates are received.
In the meantime, Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G.Kumarasiri said that strong winds which hit the area had damaged 12 houses. One person has also been killed.
